How We Tested QuillBot and ChatGPT

We kept everything constant so the test would be fair. We used QuillBot’s Standard mode with the synonym slider at default, and for ChatGPT we used the identical prompt every time: “Paraphrase the following text while keeping its meaning.” Each passage was run once, with no regenerating to cherry-pick a better result. We tested four content types because a tool that wins at one often loses at another.

Test #1 — Academic Writing

Academic writing is unforgiving: the goal is to reword a passage without losing its meaning or drifting from the original idea. To test this, we took a single formal sentence about the Industrial Revolution and ran it through both tools, QuillBot on Standard mode and ChatGPT with a simple paraphrase prompt. The source text was dense and academic, exactly the kind of material students rewrite during essay rewriting to avoid plagiarism, where one careless synonym can change the entire meaning. What we’re judging here is meaning retention and faithfulness to the source: did each tool keep every idea intact, or quietly shift the meaning while rewording? The two outputs below took noticeably different approaches to the same sentence, and the gap between them is where this test gets interesting.

Original (28 words): “The Industrial Revolution fundamentally transformed manufacturing by introducing mechanized production, which significantly increased output while reducing the reliance on manual labor and reshaping the economic structure of society.”

QuillBot (26 words): “By introducing mechanized production, which greatly expanded output while lowering the reliance on human labor and changing society’s economic structure, the Industrial Revolution dramatically changed manufacturing.”

ChatGPT (32 words): “The Industrial Revolution brought about a major change in manufacturing through the adoption of mechanized production methods, greatly increasing productivity, reducing dependence on manual labor, and transforming the economic framework of society.”

Analysis: The result subverts the common assumption immediately. QuillBot did the more aggressive rewrite, it inverted the whole sentence, moving “By introducing mechanized production…” to the front. ChatGPT kept the original subject-first order and read more smoothly. Both drifted slightly: QuillBot changed “manual labor” to “human labor,” and ChatGPT changed “output” to “productivity” (a subtly different concept).

Winner: Close, leaning ChatGPT for readability, though QuillBot wins if your priority is maximum distance from the source.

Test #2 — Blog Content

Blog writing lives and dies on flow. A rewrite can be grammatically perfect and still fail if it reads stiff or robotic, because readers simply click away within seconds. So for this test we used a casual, conversational passage about growing an audience, the kind of sentence you’d actually find in a real published blog post. We ran it through QuillBot and ChatGPT using the exact same settings as the first test, changing nothing but the input. What we’re judging is engagement, rhythm, and natural readability: which tool produced something a human would happily hit publish on, and which one flattened the personality out of the writing? The contrast in tone between these two outputs turned out to be the most revealing part of the entire test.

Original (33 words): “If you want to grow your audience, posting consistently is more important than posting perfectly. Readers come back for reliability, not occasional brilliance, so a steady schedule will almost always beat sporadic masterpieces.”

QuillBot (36 words): “Blogging regularly is more crucial than blogging flawlessly if you want to increase your audience. A consistent schedule will almost always outperform sporadic masterpieces because readers come back for consistency rather than flashes of genius.”

ChatGPT (47 words):“If your goal is to build a larger audience, consistency matters more than perfection. People return because they can count on regular content, not because of occasional standout posts. In most cases, maintaining a steady publishing schedule will outperform posting exceptional content only once in a while.”

Analysis: ChatGPT broke the two original sentences into three shorter ones, the single biggest readability lever in blog writing, and it reads like a human wrote it. QuillBot’s version is competent and produced one nice phrase (“flashes of genius”), but it swapped “posting” for “blogging,” which subtly narrows the meaning, and “blogging flawlessly” reads slightly stiff.

Winner: ChatGPT, clearly, for blog content where natural flow matters most.

Test #3 — SEO Content

SEO rewriting carries a demand the other tests don’t: you have to reword the text without dropping the keywords or breaking search intent. To test this, we used a passage targeting “best running shoes for beginners,” deliberately packed with phrases an SEO writer cannot afford to lose in a rewrite. We ran it through both tools and then examined the outputs closely, word by word. What we’re judging is keyword retention, search-intent preservation, and whether key entities survived the process. After getting each output, we specifically checked whether the exact phrases “best running shoes for beginners” and “lightweight cushioned shoes” made it through, because in SEO, quietly losing those target phrases can tank a page’s rankings even when the rewrite reads perfectly fine.

Original (33 words): “Choosing the best running shoes for beginners depends on your foot type, running surface, and budget. Lightweight cushioned shoes are ideal for new runners because they reduce injury risk and improve comfort during long-distance training.”

QuillBot (38 words): “Your budget, running surface, and foot type all play a role in selecting the finest running shoes for beginners. Because they lower the risk of injury and increase comfort during long-distance training, lightweight, cushioned shoes are perfect for novice runners.”

ChatGPT (46 words): “The best running shoes for beginners should match your foot type, preferred running surface, and budget. For new runners, lightweight shoes with good cushioning are often the best choice, as they provide greater comfort during longer runs and help lower the risk of injury while training.”

Analysis: This is the most important test for SEO writers, and here QuillBot’s aggressive rewriting became a liability. It changed the exact target keyword “best running shoes for beginners” into “finest running shoes for beginners”, a phrase nobody searches, and turned “new runners” into “novice runners.” ChatGPT preserved the primary keyword exactly. Neither was perfect: both altered “lightweight cushioned shoes.”

Winner: ChatGPT, with a loud caveat below.

Test #4 — Technical Content

For this test we used a sentence about database indexing, deliberately filled with precise terms that have to stay exact to make sense. We ran it through QuillBot and ChatGPT using the same consistent approach as every other test in this comparison. What we’re judging is terminology accuracy and meaning preservation under complexity: did each tool keep critical terms like “full table scan,” “index,” and “query execution time” intact, or swap them for vague synonyms that would confuse any technical reader? A tool that mangles those terms fails this test outright, no matter how smooth or natural the rest of the rewritten sentence happens to read.

Original (33 words): “When a database query lacks a proper index, the system performs a full table scan, reading every row to find matching records, which dramatically increases query execution time as the dataset grows.”

QuillBot (37 words): “The system executes a full table scan, scanning each row to discover matching records, when a database query is not properly indexed. This significantly lengthens the query execution time as the dataset expands.”

ChatGPT (44 words): “When a database query does not have an appropriate index, it must scan the entire table and examine every row to locate matching data. As the amount of data increases, this full table scan significantly slows down query performance and execution speed.”

Analysis: Here’s the twist. Despite being the more aggressive rewriter everywhere else, QuillBot won on precision, it kept “full table scan,” “indexed,” and “query execution time” exactly intact. ChatGPT, the smoother writer, drifted: it softened “index” and changed the specific, measurable “query execution time” into the vaguer “query performance and execution speed,” which a database engineer would notice.

Winner: QuillBot, for technical content where exact terminology can’t be compromised.

Which Tool Produces More Human-Sounding Text?

Across all four tests, one pattern was consistent: ChatGPT reads more like a person. It varied sentence length, broke long sentences into short ones, and used natural transitions. QuillBot’s output was always clean and grammatically correct, but it kept a denser rhythm and occasionally produced slightly stiff phrasing (“blogging flawlessly”, “human labor”).

There’s a trade-off hiding in ChatGPT’s naturalness, though: it expanded the text every single time (28→32, 33→47, 33→46, 33→44 words). That padding can dilute keyword density and add fluff you’ll need to trim. QuillBot stayed far closer to the original length in every test.
